چکیده

Compounding is a highly productive phenomenon in Persian and compound verbs have been the subject of several interesting studies in a variety of frameworks. In this paper, I look at a small subset of these verbs and try to capture some of the constraints and generalities involved in the compounding process. The theoretical framework of the paper is the Generative Lexicon (GL) as formalized in Pustejovsky (1995). In section 1, I provide a brief review of some of the studies on compound verbs in Persian. Section 2 discusses the data that I consider and the theoretical analysis of the data is presented in section 3. The goal of the paper is to approach a well-known problem from a new angle and see whether or not the approach taken, namely the GL approach, looks as a promising framework for the analysis of Persian compounds. As it is argued in the body of the paper, this approach proves very promising enabling the researcher to capture a lot of the intuitionis and generalities observed in the phenomenon although it is acknowledge that a great deal of details remain to be worked out in future research.

Primitives of Events and the Semantic Representation

The event structure (aktionsart) is a widely discussed issue for the representation of verbal semantics in languages. However, there is still problems for the classification of verbs into state, activity, accomplishment, achievement and semelfactive. It is also not clear where are the differences of them embedded in terms of lexical, semantic or syntactic levels. In this paper, we will give a d...

Chapter 16 Purpose Verbs

Work on ontologies and lexical semantics has long been aware of different subsumption relations among concepts that are lexically encoded as nouns (Gangemi et al. 2001, 2002; Guarino and Welty 2001). An important distinction is that between TYPES and ROLES (Guarino and Welty 2002; Pustejovsky 1995). For example, poodle and Welsh corgi are TYPES of dog, while pet, hunting dog, guard dog, and wor...

Generative Lexicon Approach to Derived Inchoative Verbs in Korean

Since Vendler (1967), the event structure and the verbal aspect have been one of the controversial issues in verbal semantics. These issues result from the fact that all the verbs, which belong to each aspectual class, do not behave in the same way within each class. Among four aspectual classes suggested by Vendler (1967), achievement verbs show various behaviors and the subclasses of achievem...

Morphological Passivization and the Change of Lexical-Semantic Structures in Korean

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lexical-semantic structure of morphologically derived passive verbs in Korean based on Pustejovsky (1995)'s Generative Lexicon Theory (GL) and to explain the change of the root verb's lexical-semantic structure by means of passivization. Passivization in this paper is defined as the unaccusaztivization. In Argument Structure of derived passive verbs, ...
